Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi Embarks on Four-Day Official Visit to Algeria

Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi

AUG 24: General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), has embarked on an official visit to Algeria from 25–28 August 2025. The visit follows recent high-level interactions including those by the President of India and the Chief of Defence Staff, underlining the growing importance of India-Algeria relations, particularly in the field of defence and security cooperation.

The primary objective of General Dwivedi’s visit is to reinforce bilateral defence engagement, enhance Army-to-Army cooperation, and exchange perspectives on regional as well as global security challenges. Discussions will also focus on identifying avenues for defence industrial collaboration and joint initiatives to bolster security ties.

During his stay, the COAS will hold a series of meetings with senior Algerian defence leadership. His engagements include high-level talks with General Saïd Chanegriha, Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defence & Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army; Lieutenant General Mostefa Smaali, Commander of Land Forces; and Dr. Swati Kulkarni, India’s Ambassador to Algeria.

General Dwivedi is also scheduled to visit prominent Algerian military institutions such as the School of Command and Major Staff, Tamentfoust, and the Cherchell Military Academy. He will also pay homage at the Martyrs Memorial, a symbol of Algeria’s struggle for independence.

The visit is being seen as a continuation of growing defence synergy between the two nations. Earlier, from 30 July to 1 August 2025, Indian defence industries had showcased their capabilities at a Defence Seminar in Algiers, which laid the groundwork for industrial cooperation and technology exchanges.

By engaging at the highest levels, India and Algeria are set to build on their historic ties, with defence cooperation emerging as a strong pillar of bilateral relations. The COAS visit is expected to give fresh momentum to advancing shared security interests, fostering regional stability, and expanding military-to-military engagement between the two countries.
