16 July: NEW DELHI: The Central Government has launched the eighth tranche of auctions for 20 critical mineral blocks, marking another significant step towards strengthening India’s supply chain security and reducing dependence on imports of strategic minerals.

The newly announced auction includes mineral blocks containing resources that are essential for high-tech manufacturing, clean energy technologies, electric vehicles, electronics, aerospace, and defence production. The initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to secure a stable supply of critical minerals needed for India’s industrial and economic growth.

According to officials, the auction aims to encourage private sector participation in the exploration and development of critical mineral resources while enhancing domestic production. Increasing the availability of these minerals is expected to support India’s transition towards advanced manufacturing and renewable energy.

Critical minerals such as lithium, graphite, cobalt, nickel, rare earth elements, and other strategic resources are increasingly important for emerging technologies. The government has been taking several policy measures to strengthen the country’s mineral security and reduce vulnerabilities in global supply chains.

Officials said the latest tranche of auctions reflects India’s commitment to building a resilient and self-reliant mineral ecosystem. Developing domestic mining capabilities will help ensure uninterrupted availability of raw materials required for sectors such as battery manufacturing, electronics, telecommunications, and clean energy infrastructure.

The Ministry has invited eligible companies to participate in the competitive bidding process, with the objective of promoting transparent allocation of mineral resources. The auctions are expected to attract investments in exploration, mining, and mineral processing, creating employment opportunities and boosting economic activity.

Industry experts believe that expanding domestic production of critical minerals is vital for achieving India’s ambitions in electric mobility, renewable energy, semiconductor manufacturing, and advanced technologies. A reliable supply of strategic minerals is also considered essential for strengthening national security and industrial competitiveness.

The government has been implementing a series of reforms in the mining sector to improve ease of doing business, promote private investment, and accelerate mineral exploration. The latest auction builds on previous rounds aimed at unlocking the country’s untapped mineral potential.

Officials noted that strengthening domestic mineral production will not only reduce import dependence but also support the government’s vision of building resilient global supply chains. The initiative is aligned with national priorities such as Make in India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and the clean energy transition.

Experts say that the successful development of these mineral blocks could significantly contribute to India’s long-term manufacturing capabilities while positioning the country as a key player in global critical mineral value chains.

The launch of the eighth tranche of auctions underscores the Centre’s continued focus on ensuring resource security, supporting industrial growth, and creating a robust ecosystem for strategic minerals that are crucial for the nation’s future economic development.
