OCT 28: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, emphasized that India’s infrastructure must be people-centric, ensuring comfort, convenience, and safety for citizens. Addressing the CII National Conference on “Future of Smart Roads – Safety, Sustainability and Resilience” in New Delhi, the Minister outlined three key pillars guiding the future of infrastructure — People, Prosperity, and Planning.

He announced that 670 roadside amenities have already been developed across the country, underscoring the government’s focus on traveler convenience and safety. Highlighting the economic potential of the sector, Shri Gadkari revealed that the Ministry’s annual revenue, currently at ₹55,000 crore, is projected to rise to ₹1.4 lakh crore within two years, reflecting rapid sectoral growth.

A comprehensive infrastructure plan for 2027 is underway, incorporating sustainable measures such as using 80 lakh tonnes of segregated plastic waste in road construction and treated water reuse for infrastructure projects. Work is progressing to upgrade 25,000 km of two-lane highways into four lanes, while a ₹2 lakh crore port connectivity programme is linking major ports with national highways to boost logistics efficiency.

Shri Gadkari highlighted that every rupee invested in infrastructure generates three rupees of economic growth, reflecting its strong multiplier impact. He also stressed the use of precast technology for timely, quality construction and urged engineers and contractors to take greater ownership and accountability.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building smart, sustainable, and safe roads, integrating technology with essential amenities like EV charging, parking, and pedestrian access, making India’s highways engines of growth and citizen well-being.
