4 june: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several parts of Kerala and Mahe, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall as monsoon activity intensifies over the region.

According to weather officials, favourable atmospheric conditions are likely to trigger widespread rainfall across Kerala and Mahe over the coming days. The orange alert indicates the possibility of significant rainfall that could lead to waterlogging, localized flooding, and disruptions to transportation and daily activities.

The IMD has advised residents, fishermen, local authorities, and disaster management agencies to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions in areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides.

Officials stated that districts expected to receive intense rainfall may witness strong winds, reduced visibility, and temporary disruptions in road and rail movement. People living in low-lying areas have been advised to closely monitor weather updates and follow instructions issued by local administrations.

With the southwest monsoon gradually strengthening along India’s western coast, Kerala is among the first states to experience sustained seasonal rainfall. The state often receives heavy showers during this period, making preparedness measures crucial for minimizing risks.

Disaster management teams have been placed on alert in several areas, while district administrations are monitoring river levels, drainage systems, and landslide-prone zones. Emergency response agencies have also been directed to remain ready for any weather-related contingencies.

The IMD regularly issues colour-coded alerts to inform the public and authorities about weather severity. An orange alert signifies that people should be prepared for potentially impactful weather conditions and remain updated through official advisories.

Agriculture experts noted that while monsoon rains are essential for farming activities and water resource replenishment, excessive rainfall over a short period can affect crops, infrastructure, and local transport systems.

Fishermen have also been advised to exercise caution before venturing into the sea, as rough weather conditions and strong winds may prevail along parts of the coastline.

Kerala’s monsoon season plays a vital role in supporting agriculture, reservoirs, and water availability. However, authorities continue to emphasize the importance of preparedness, particularly in regions historically prone to flooding and landslides during periods of intense rainfall.

Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours, secure vulnerable structures, and stay informed through official weather bulletins.

The IMD is expected to continue monitoring the evolving weather system and provide updated forecasts and advisories as conditions develop.
