AUG 17: INS Tamal, the Indian Navy’s latest stealth frigate, successfully concluded her port call at Naples, Italy, from 13th to 16th August 2025, during her return voyage to India. The visit underscored the deepening defence and strategic ties between India and Italy, which were elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2023.
Prior to entering the harbour at Naples, INS Tamal conducted a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with ITS Trieste, the Italian Navy’s newly commissioned Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD). The joint exercise included communication drills, manoeuvres, flying operations, and an exchange of sea riders, culminating in a ceremonial steam past. The PASSEX not only enhanced interoperability but also strengthened mutual understanding of operational procedures between the two navies.
During the port call, INS Tamal engaged in multiple initiatives aimed at fostering defence collaboration and professional exchanges. The Commanding Officer called on Vice Admiral Pierpaolo Budri, Chief of Staff of the Logistics Command of the Italian Navy, and Ms Laura Lieto, Deputy Mayor of Naples. Discussions focused on advancing initiatives outlined in the India-Italy Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029.
The ship also hosted a cultural programme onboard in coordination with the Embassy of India in Rome, attended by officials from the Italian Government, the Italian Navy, the Diplomatic Corps, UN agency representatives, and defence industry leaders. The Ambassador of India to Italy, H.E. Mrs. Vani Rao, interacted with the ship’s crew and senior officers from the Italian Navy, highlighting the collaborative spirit of the visit.
INS Tamal’s crew celebrated India’s 79th Independence Day onboard on 15th August and participated in festivities at the Embassy of India in Rome, reflecting India’s commitment to sharing its cultural heritage abroad.
The successful port call reinforces India’s strategic focus on enhancing maritime diplomacy, exchanging best practices, and expanding joint operational opportunities with partner navies. Following departure from Naples on 16th August, INS Tamal is scheduled to visit additional European and Asian ports before returning to her home base in India, further strengthening bilateral ties and advancing India’s maritime engagement on the global stage.
