In a significant step toward strengthening global democratic engagement, nine delegates from six countries have arrived in Puducherry under the International Election Visitors’ Programme (IEVP) organised by the Election Commission of India.

The visiting delegation comprises representatives from Kyrgyzstan, Côte d’Ivoire, Moldova, Mongolia, Guyana, and Bhutan, reflecting a diverse global interest in understanding India’s robust electoral system. The programme aims to provide international participants with firsthand exposure to the scale, transparency, and efficiency of the world’s largest democracy.

Upon arrival, the delegates attended an orientation session conducted by the District Election Officer, where they were briefed on India’s electoral framework, institutional mechanisms, and the operational processes involved in conducting free and fair elections. The session also highlighted the role of technology and innovation in enhancing electoral transparency and voter participation.

As part of their visit, the delegates are scheduled to tour Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) distribution centres, offering them insights into the logistical arrangements and security protocols that underpin India’s election management system. The visit will allow them to observe how EVMs are handled, stored, and prepared for deployment across polling stations.

On the following day, the delegation will visit selected polling stations to witness polling procedures firsthand. This will include observing voter verification processes, polling staff coordination, and measures taken to ensure accessibility and inclusivity for all voters.

The International Election Visitors’ Programme is a flagship initiative of the Election Commission of India designed to promote knowledge exchange and collaboration between Election Management Bodies worldwide. It serves as a platform for sharing best practices, innovations, and experiences in election administration.

India’s electoral system, known for its scale and complexity, continues to attract global attention for its ability to conduct elections involving millions of voters with remarkable efficiency. Through initiatives like IEVP, the country not only showcases its democratic processes but also contributes to strengthening democratic institutions globally.

Officials noted that such interactions help build mutual understanding and trust among nations while encouraging the adoption of best practices in election management. The programme also reinforces India’s role as a leader in democratic governance and electoral innovation.
