SEP 06: Jal Shakti Minister Javed Ahmed Rana chaired a high-level review meeting with senior officials of the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department to evaluate the ongoing flood management operations along the Jehlum River. The focus of the meeting was on immediate response measures, particularly the dewatering of inundated areas and minimizing the impact on local communities.
During the meeting, Additional Chief Secretary, Jal Shakti, Shaleen Kabra provided a detailed briefing on the breach at Shalini-Lasjan in Budgam, outlining its impact on nearby areas. Minister Rana stressed the need for swift, coordinated action to reduce public inconvenience, protect public health, and ensure the safety of all affected residents.
The session also included a comprehensive presentation on long-term flood mitigation strategies, including the strengthening of river embankments, upgradation of drainage systems, and the enhancement of early warning mechanisms to better prepare for future flooding events.
Minister Rana directed officials to maintain round-the-clock monitoring of the situation and to ensure prompt resolution of any new challenges that may arise. He emphasized that rapid communication and on-ground responsiveness are critical in safeguarding lives and property during this evolving crisis.
He also reiterated the commitment of the Omar Abdullah-led Government to stand by the people in these testing times. The administration, he said, is fully mobilized and working in close coordination with all departments to address both the immediate and long-term needs arising from the flood situation.
The meeting concluded with a call for enhanced coordination between various agencies and departments, including local authorities, to ensure that relief and restoration measures are both effective and sustainable.
