16 May: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated the Centre’s commitment to supporting the long-term growth and development of Sikkim, highlighting the state’s progress in sustainable development, tourism, and public welfare.
In his remarks, the Prime Minister stated that the Union Government will continue working closely with Sikkim to strengthen infrastructure, connectivity, economic opportunities, and social welfare initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for people in the Himalayan state.
PM Modi praised Sikkim for emerging as a model of environmentally conscious growth and balanced development. He noted that the state has gained national recognition for promoting organic farming, ecological conservation, clean surroundings, and sustainable tourism practices.
Sikkim, which became India’s first fully organic state, is widely admired for preserving its natural beauty while pursuing economic and social progress. The state’s focus on green development and environmental protection has often been highlighted as an example of sustainable governance.
The Prime Minister said the Centre remains committed to supporting projects related to road connectivity, digital infrastructure, healthcare services, education, tourism promotion, and rural development across the state.
Officials said several central government schemes are currently being implemented in Sikkim with the objective of improving public services and generating employment opportunities, especially for youth and rural communities.
Improving connectivity in northeastern and border regions continues to remain a key focus area for the Union Government. Better roads, communication systems, and transport infrastructure are expected to strengthen tourism, trade, and economic integration in the region.
PM Modi also appreciated the people of Sikkim for maintaining social harmony, cultural heritage, and environmental responsibility while adapting to modern development needs.
Political analysts believe the Centre’s continued emphasis on northeastern and Himalayan states reflects a broader development strategy focused on strengthening regional infrastructure, tourism, and strategic connectivity.
Over the past few years, the government has increased investment in infrastructure and public welfare initiatives across northeastern India, recognising the region’s growing importance in the country’s economic and strategic landscape.
Tourism remains one of Sikkim’s strongest economic sectors. The state attracts visitors from across India and abroad due to its scenic mountain landscapes, monasteries, adventure tourism activities, and eco-friendly environment.
Experts say improved infrastructure and sustainable tourism policies can further expand employment opportunities for local residents while boosting the state’s economy.
The Prime Minister’s assurance of continued support is expected to strengthen confidence in ongoing developmental initiatives and encourage greater coordination between the Centre and the state government for future growth projects.
As India continues focusing on balanced regional development, states like Sikkim are increasingly being viewed as important contributors to the country’s sustainable growth and tourism-driven economy.
