Feb 9: Reasi district has made significant progress towards achieving universal access to safe drinking water under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), moving closer to the milestone of 100 per cent Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) coverage.

As per official figures, the district has successfully provided over 33,000 tap water connections to households against a total target of 37,578 connections, reflecting steady advancement toward the Centre’s vision of ensuring potable water supply to every rural household.

The achievement marks a major step in improving public health, sanitation, and quality of life for residents, particularly in remote and hilly areas of the district. With sustained efforts by the district administration and the Public Health Engineering department, Reasi is now on the verge of attaining universal tap water access.

Officials said that the Jal Jeevan Mission has transformed water supply infrastructure by focusing on household-level delivery, water quality monitoring, and sustainability of sources. The scheme aims to reduce the dependence on unsafe water sources and alleviate the burden on women and children who traditionally travel long distances to fetch water.

District authorities have been closely monitoring project execution to ensure the timely completion of remaining connections. Emphasis has also been placed on community participation, operation and maintenance of water supply systems, and awareness about water conservation.

The near-complete coverage under the Jal Jeevan Mission is expected to yield long-term benefits, including reduced water-borne diseases, better hygiene standards, and improved socio-economic conditions in rural areas of Reasi.

With only a small percentage of households left to be covered, officials expressed confidence that the district will soon achieve 100 per cent tap water connectivity, aligning with the national objective of providing “Har Ghar Jal”.
