Sep 4: In response to rapidly rising water levels in the Chenab River, authorities at the Salal Dam in Reasi district have opened its floodgates as a precautionary measure. The move is aimed at safeguarding the structural integrity of the hydroelectric project while also preventing uncontrolled flooding in downstream areas.
Officials confirmed that the decision was taken after heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Jammu and Kashmir pushed the water levels beyond the safe threshold. By releasing controlled volumes of water, dam engineers are balancing reservoir safety with downstream flood management.
The district administration has issued advisories to people living in low-lying and riverside villages downstream of the Chenab, urging them to remain vigilant and avoid venturing near the swollen riverbanks. Disaster management teams have been placed on alert, with emphasis on ensuring that evacuation and relief measures can be swiftly activated if required.
Local authorities have also deployed additional personnel to monitor embankments, bridges, and vulnerable areas along the river’s course. Fishermen and sand extractors have been specifically cautioned to suspend operations until water levels stabilize.
The Salal Hydroelectric Project, one of the major power-producing stations in Jammu and Kashmir, plays a crucial role in the region’s energy supply. With the monsoon at its peak, careful regulation of water discharge is essential to safeguard both the project infrastructure and the populations downstream.
Officials reassured that the dam remains structurally safe and that the opening of the gates was part of standard operating procedures followed during high inflow situations. The water release is being continuously monitored to ensure minimal disruption to settlements along the Chenab basin.
While no major damage has been reported so far, residents in flood-prone belts downstream are being urged to cooperate with authorities and follow advisories strictly until the situation normalizes.
