14 May: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has emphasized that self-reliance in defence production and greater jointness among the armed forces are crucial for ensuring India’s strategic autonomy and long-term national security.

Speaking at an official event, the Defence Minister highlighted the importance of strengthening indigenous defence capabilities while promoting coordination among the Army, Navy, and Air Force to effectively address emerging security challenges.

Rajnath Singh said India’s vision of strategic autonomy can only be achieved when the country becomes more self-sufficient in defence technology, manufacturing, and military preparedness.

He underlined that the government’s push for “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” in the defence sector is aimed at reducing dependence on imports and encouraging domestic innovation, research, and production capabilities.

According to the Defence Minister, self-reliance in defence is not only an economic priority but also a strategic necessity in an increasingly uncertain global security environment.

He stated that modern warfare and evolving geopolitical conditions require integrated planning, coordinated operations, and seamless cooperation among all branches of the armed forces.

The minister stressed that “jointness” among the services is essential for building a stronger and more efficient defence structure capable of responding swiftly to complex threats.

India has in recent years focused on expanding indigenous defence manufacturing under various policy initiatives encouraging private sector participation, technology development, and defence exports.

Officials say efforts are being made to modernise military infrastructure, strengthen defence research institutions, and promote advanced manufacturing under the government’s long-term strategic planning framework.

Rajnath Singh also highlighted the growing role of innovation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and advanced technologies in future defence preparedness.

He noted that India’s defence ecosystem is undergoing rapid transformation with increasing emphasis on indigenous equipment, modernisation, and operational coordination among military forces.

Experts believe the focus on strategic autonomy reflects India’s broader effort to strengthen independent decision-making capabilities in defence and foreign policy while maintaining readiness against evolving regional and global challenges.

The Defence Minister reiterated that national security remains a top priority and that building strong indigenous capabilities will contribute significantly toward safeguarding India’s sovereignty and strategic interests.

The remarks come at a time when India is actively expanding domestic defence production, enhancing military modernisation, and strengthening integrated operational frameworks across the armed forces.
