Jan 19: A productive interaction and detailed discussion were held with a delegation from the Skill Development Department, Jammu and Kashmir, focusing on academic arrangements for heritage craft courses and the broader goal of strengthening traditional crafts through structured education and skill development.
The meeting centred on exploring ways to integrate heritage crafts into formal and vocational education frameworks, ensuring that traditional skills are preserved while being adapted to modern market requirements. Emphasis was laid on designing academic curricula that combine theoretical knowledge with hands-on training, enabling learners to gain both cultural understanding and employable skills.
Participants discussed the importance of documenting and standardising traditional craft techniques to ensure consistency in training while maintaining their authenticity. The role of master artisans as mentors and trainers was highlighted, recognising their experience as a valuable resource in transmitting generational knowledge to young learners.
The discussion also focused on creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for artisans by linking heritage craft education with market access, entrepreneurship training and modern design inputs. Integrating digital tools, quality control standards and branding strategies into craft education was identified as essential for enhancing the competitiveness of traditional products at national and global levels.
Special attention was given to involving youth and women in heritage craft courses, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas, to promote inclusive growth and cultural preservation. The delegation underlined that skill development initiatives aligned with heritage crafts can play a crucial role in employment generation, cultural continuity and regional economic development.
The interaction reaffirmed the commitment of the Skill Development Department to collaborate with educational institutions, industry experts and artisan communities to strengthen the ecosystem for heritage crafts in Jammu and Kashmir. By embedding traditional crafts within structured academic and skill development programmes, the initiative aims to safeguard cultural heritage while creating new opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.
