5 AUg: In a decisive push towards urban renewal, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday reviewed the progress of the ambitious Tawi Riverfront Development Project, describing it as a “transformative step in Jammu’s urban evolution.”
During a detailed site inspection spanning from Bhagwati Nagar Barrage to Bikram Chowk Bridge, the Chief Minister took stock of Phase-I works—97% of which are now complete. Executed under the aegis of Jammu Smart City Limited (JSCL), the project is not merely a beautification initiative; it is a multi-pronged urban intervention that merges flood protection, eco-restoration, recreation, tourism, and commerce into a single visionary model.
The Tawi, historically revered and ecologically vital, is being reimagined as the nucleus of Jammu’s new identity. With multi-tiered promenades, resilient flood mitigation systems, and future-ready infrastructure for eco-tourism and riverside commerce, the riverfront is set to become the city’s social and economic lifeline.
A hallmark of the project lies in its climate-resilient design, balancing development with ecological sensitivity. Flood defense structures embedded into public spaces, pedestrian-friendly walkways, open green zones, and planned business districts along the riverbanks exemplify a smart blend of urban functionality and environmental stewardship.
Commending the efforts of JSCL, Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), and the Jal Shakti Department, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of quality control, sustainability, and timely completion. His directive underlines the government’s commitment not only to infrastructure delivery but to long-term urban resilience.
Importantly, this project marks a shift in how cities like Jammu are planning their future—not by turning away from nature but by embracing and reengineering it. The Tawi Riverfront is emerging as a blueprint for integrated river management that combines aesthetic revival with adaptive planning, offering lessons for other cities across the country.
Once completed, the Tawi Riverfront promises to become a flagship symbol of Jammu’s rejuvenation—where culture meets commerce, and ecology coexists with modernity.
