New Delhi, October 19: Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has conferred the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for 2024 and 2025 on 106 young artists from across the country, recognising their contributions to India’s performing arts.

Addressing the award ceremony in New Delhi on Monday, Shekhawat emphasised that the vision of Viksit Bharat cannot be achieved through infrastructure development and material progress alone. He said art, culture and heritage are equally important in shaping the country’s identity and future.

The minister highlighted India’s rich cultural traditions, describing them as an essential part of the nation’s identity. He also noted that India’s global standing is evolving and that artists have an important role in this transformation.

Young Artists Recognised for Contributions to Performing Arts

The awards, presented by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, recognise emerging talent in India’s performing arts. The 106 recipients were selected for the award years 2024 and 2025 across fields including music, dance and drama.

Shekhawat acknowledged the contribution of generations of artists who have preserved and promoted India’s cultural traditions despite various challenges. Their dedication, he noted, has helped sustain the country’s artistic heritage.

Instituted in 2006, the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar honours young artists who demonstrate exceptional promise in their respective fields. The award is open to eligible artists up to 40 years of age and carries prize money of ₹25,000, along with a Tamrapatra and an Angavastram.

Artists Play Key Role in Preserving India’s Cultural Identity

The ceremony underscored the importance of encouraging young performers and providing them with recognition and opportunities to develop their skills.

India’s performing arts encompass a diverse range of classical and traditional forms, alongside contemporary expressions. Supporting young artists helps ensure that these traditions continue to evolve while remaining connected to their cultural roots.

The recognition also highlights the role of cultural institutions in nurturing talent and creating platforms for artists to contribute to India’s artistic landscape.

Theatre Practitioner Highlights Commitment to the Art Form

Speaking to Akashvani News, theatre actor and director Dr Anand Kumar Pandey expressed happiness at receiving the recognition. He described theatre as a lifelong commitment and said he intends to continue contributing through acting, direction and writing.

Pandey also spoke about his efforts to create better opportunities for emerging artists in Chhattisgarh, highlighting the importance of supporting the next generation of theatre practitioners.

The recognition of artists from across the country reflects the diversity of India’s performing arts community and the continuing contribution of young talent to its cultural life.

The ceremony reinforced the message that cultural development must remain an integral part of India’s progress, with artists and cultural institutions playing a vital role in preserving heritage and inspiring future generations.
