MAY 08: The process of electoral roll revision for two key Assembly Constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir—27-Budgam and 77-Nagrota—has reached its next phase, with authorities now inviting appeals from the public.

Following a comprehensive door-to-door verification drive carried out by 323 Booth Level Officers (BLOs), the draft Electoral Rolls were officially published on April 8, 2025, by the respective Electoral Registration Officers (EROs). These preliminary rolls aimed to provide an updated and accurate list of eligible voters in both constituencies.

Political engagement was active during the revision process, with all recognized political parties collectively appointing 279 Booth Level Agents (BLAs). These agents played a critical role in verifying the authenticity of the draft rolls and bringing forward claims and objections on behalf of the public.

After thoroughly addressing each claim and objection received during the designated period, the final Electoral Rolls were published by the concerned EROs on May 5, 2025. Copies of these final lists were distributed to all political parties involved, ensuring transparency and inclusivity in the electoral process.

Now, as per Section 24(a) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, any individual who is dissatisfied with a decision made by the ERO can formally appeal to the District Magistrate of the concerned area.

Moreover, if the appellant remains unsatisfied with the District Magistrate’s verdict, a further appeal may be submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir for review.

Authorities have emphasized the importance of this appeal process in maintaining the integrity of the electoral system. Citizens are encouraged to review the final rolls carefully and come forward with genuine concerns regarding inaccuracies or exclusions.

This initiative marks a key milestone in strengthening democratic participation and ensuring that every eligible voter is accurately represented on the rolls ahead of any upcoming elections.

Residents of Budgam and Nagrota are urged to utilize this legal provision if they have any unresolved electoral grievances, contributing to a fair and transparent electoral process in the Union Territory.
