JUNE 15: A delegation from the Kashmir Timber Association met with the Minister for Forest, Ecology & Environment, Shri Javed Ahmed Rana, to raise pressing concerns related to timber trade regulations and forest compliance procedures in the Kashmir region.

During the meeting, the association highlighted several issues affecting timber traders, particularly inconsistencies in policy implementation between different regions of Jammu and Kashmir. They stressed the urgent need for a uniform regulatory framework that ensures fair and transparent practices across the Union Territory. According to the delegation, the current disparities in enforcement and procedural clarity have led to operational challenges, delays, and uncertainty within the trade.

The representatives of the Timber Association also shared constructive suggestions to make forest-related regulations more trader-friendly while still maintaining ecological safeguards. These included streamlining permit processes, improving coordination between forest departments and traders, and enhancing digital transparency in approvals and clearances.

In response, Minister Javed Ahmed Rana expressed appreciation for the delegation’s proactive engagement and affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the timber sector. He acknowledged the significance of the timber industry in contributing to livelihoods and local economies, particularly in forest-rich areas like Kashmir.

The Minister assured the association that their inputs would be carefully considered in future policymaking. He emphasized the government’s intention to balance economic development with ecological conservation through collaborative approaches. “We are committed to building a transparent and efficient regulatory system that works in the best interest of both the environment and the people,” he stated.

Minister Rana also mentioned that the department is working towards policy reforms aimed at reducing bureaucratic hurdles, ensuring uniformity across regions, and fostering greater ease of doing business for legitimate timber traders.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both sides agreeing to continue dialogue and cooperation in shaping policies that serve the broader public and environmental good while promoting fair trade practices.
