SEP 16:The 58th Engineers’ Day was marked by a significant event at SKICC Srinagar, where Chief Minister Omar Abdullah addressed a gathering of engineers, policymakers, and stakeholders from across Jammu and Kashmir.
Paying tribute to Sir M. Visvesvaraya, the CM praised the engineering fraternity for their dedication and underscored their vital role in driving infrastructure and energy reforms in the Union Territory.
In his keynote address, CM Abdullah called for a renewed focus on reducing transmission and distribution losses, which continue to strain J&K’s power sector. He emphasized the need to boost hydropower generation, calling it a cornerstone for the region’s economic growth and long-term energy independence..
The Chief Minister outlined a vision for sustainable, tech-driven energy management and emphasized the importance of long-term planning, innovation, and transparent governance. He urged engineers to continue their efforts toward efficiency improvement, infrastructure modernization, and the integration of cleaner energy technologies.
He also warned against over-dependence on privatization as a shortcut to reform, stating that structural improvements within the public sector would be more sustainable for J&K’s unique socio-economic context.
Throughout the event, engineers were recognized for their contributions, and discussions centered around energy policy, hydropower potential, and grid efficiency improvements. The gathering reaffirmed the engineering community’s commitment to supporting J&K’s developmental goals.
The event concluded with a call to action: for engineers to lead with innovation, ethics, and purpose — ensuring that Jammu & Kashmir’s energy future is secure, equitable, and locally driven.
