OCT 04: In a historic development, Kashmir has received its first ever consignment of cars transported by rail, marking a significant milestone in the region’s connectivity and transport infrastructure. A total of 116 Maruti Suzuki vehicles, originating from the Manesar plant in Haryana, reached Anantnag via the Jammu–Srinagar railway line. This achievement has come nearly 78 years after India gained independence, highlighting the long-awaited operationalization of this crucial rail route for freight transport.
The delivery represents not only a logistical success but also a major step in strengthening economic and commercial links with the rest of the country. Until now, vehicles and other large consignments had to rely solely on road transport, which was time-consuming and more challenging due to the difficult terrain of Jammu & Kashmir. With the rail route now capable of handling such shipments, supply chains are expected to become faster, safer, and more cost-effective.
Officials from Indian Railways and Maruti Suzuki confirmed that the vehicles were securely loaded at the Manesar facility and transported through the Jammu–Srinagar line, a route that has historically posed engineering and operational challenges due to its mountainous terrain. The successful shipment is being celebrated as a milestone in modernizing Kashmir’s connectivity and enhancing the region’s trade and logistics capabilities.
Industry experts believe that this development could pave the way for more large-scale shipments, including consumer goods and industrial equipment, reaching the region via rail, thereby reducing dependence on road transport and improving overall efficiency.
This historic rail delivery marks a new chapter in Jammu & Kashmir’s economic integration, signaling a future where the region can be seamlessly connected to national supply networks and commercial hubs.
