DEC 19 : The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has issued a weather advisory forecasting cloudy conditions across Jammu and Kashmir from December 18 onwards, with light to moderate snowfall expected in higher reaches of the Union Territory. According to the forecast, December 20 and 21 are likely to witness intensified weather activity, prompting authorities to advise travellers and transporters to exercise caution.
As per the advisory, higher-altitude areas are expected to receive fresh snowfall, while plains may experience light rainfall during the same period. The weather system is expected to affect several districts, with Kupwara, Bandipora and Ganderbal likely to witness moderate to heavy snowfall on December 21, raising concerns over road connectivity and movement in mountainous regions.
Meteorological officials stated that cloud cover will increase from December 18, marking the onset of a spell that could disrupt normal life in vulnerable areas, particularly in north and central Kashmir. The forecast indicates that snowfall intensity may vary across regions, but accumulation in higher reaches could impact mountain passes, border roads, and interior routes.
In view of the predicted weather conditions, travellers, tourists, and transport operators have been advised to strictly follow official traffic advisories and administrative instructions. Authorities have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel to snow-bound areas during peak snowfall days and to remain updated through official weather and traffic bulletins.
The advisory gains significance as the period coincides with increased tourist movement to Kashmir’s higher reaches, including destinations known for winter tourism. Officials stressed the importance of preparedness, particularly for residents in snow-prone regions, and advised stocking essential supplies and ensuring adequate heating arrangements.
Transport and road maintenance agencies have been directed to remain on alert, especially on key routes connecting higher reaches. Snow clearance machinery and response teams are expected to be kept ready to deal with any eventualities arising due to snowfall accumulation or icy road conditions.
The administration has also cautioned against landslides and slippery conditions in hilly terrains, which could pose risks to commuters. Drivers have been advised to use anti-skid devices where necessary and adhere to safety protocols while travelling through vulnerable stretches.
The Meteorological Centre will continue to closely monitor the evolving weather pattern and issue updates as required. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and avoid spreading unverified information.
With winter conditions intensifying across the Union Territory, the advisory serves as a timely reminder to prioritise safety, preparedness, and coordination during adverse weather conditions.
