Jan 26: In a significant boost to logistics and food security in Jammu and Kashmir, Indian Railways has successfully delivered the first full freight rake of rice to Anantnag in the Kashmir Valley. The rake, comprising 42 wagons and carrying over 2,700 metric tonnes of rice, reached Anantnag on 22 January, marking a major milestone in freight transportation to the region.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Railways, the successful movement of this full rake demonstrates the strength and reliability of all-weather rail connectivity to the Kashmir Valley. The development is being seen as a transformational step in ensuring an uninterrupted supply of essential commodities, particularly during adverse weather conditions that often disrupt road transport.

The rake was loaded at the Sangrur rail terminal in Punjab on 21 January and transported to Anantnag within 24 hours, showcasing the efficiency and operational readiness of the railway network. Officials said the swift transit highlights the growing capability of Indian Railways to support large-scale freight movement to geographically challenging regions.

The Ministry noted that the delivery has significantly strengthened the food grain supply chain and distribution network in the Valley. By enabling bulk transportation at lower logistics costs, rail connectivity is expected to play a crucial role in stabilising prices and ensuring the timely availability of food grains for consumers.

This milestone assumes added importance as Kashmir frequently faces supply challenges during the winter months due to snowfall and road blockages. The ability to transport essential commodities through rail corridors provides a dependable alternative, reducing dependence on vulnerable road links.

Railway officials emphasised that such freight operations underline the broader vision of integrating Jammu and Kashmir more closely with the national supply and logistics grid. Enhanced freight movement is also expected to benefit trade, commerce, and overall economic activity in the region.

The successful handling of the full rake at Anantnag has encouraged Indian Railways to explore regular freight services for food grains and other essential commodities to the Valley. Authorities believe this will not only ensure food security but also support government welfare schemes by enabling efficient distribution.

The Ministry of Railways reiterated its commitment to leveraging modern infrastructure and operational efficiencies to ensure seamless, cost-effective, and reliable transportation to all parts of the country, including remote and climatically sensitive regions like Kashmir.
