Dubai witnessed a vibrant celebration of Diwali as diplomats from 18 countries, representatives of the UAE authorities and more than 5,000 members of the Indian community came together for an international celebration organised by the Consulate General of India in Dubai in collaboration with FOI Events.
The event brought together people from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds to celebrate the Festival of Lights, highlighting the values of friendship, cultural exchange, harmony and togetherness.
Seven countries — Singapore, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Nepal, Malaysia, Thailand and Mauritius — participated as partner nations. Their Consuls General, senior diplomats and representatives from various diplomatic missions attended the celebrations alongside officials from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Community Development Authority and Dubai CARES.
First Multinational Diwali Celebration of Its Kind in Dubai
The gathering marked the first time that several countries participated as partners in a joint Diwali celebration in Dubai.
Country-themed display stalls set up by Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Nepal, Malaysia and Thailand were among the key attractions. These displays offered visitors an opportunity to explore the participating countries’ festive traditions, customs and cultural connections associated with the celebration.
Representatives from additional diplomatic missions, including the Netherlands, Peru, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, the Philippines, Bangladesh, the United States, the United Kingdom, Iraq, Kenya and Egypt, also attended the programme.
The participation of diplomats from 18 countries reflected the growing international appeal of Diwali and its significance as a platform for bringing communities together.
Cultural Performances Add Festive Colour
The celebrations featured a range of cultural and artistic performances showcasing the diversity of participating communities.
The Dubai Police Band delivered a special musical performance, while the PRERNA Group presented an engaging programme highlighting the talents of People of Determination.
Artists from Nepal and Sri Lanka added to the festivities with cultural performances representing their rich South Asian traditions.
Rangoli-making and dance competitions were also organised, allowing participants to demonstrate their creativity and artistic abilities while celebrating the spirit of Diwali.
Diwali’s Universal Message of Unity and Friendship
Diplomats attending the event highlighted the universal appeal of Diwali, noting that although the festival is observed differently across countries, its central message of togetherness remains widely shared.
They also emphasised how cultural traditions, including rangoli, festive food and open-house celebrations, provide opportunities for people from different backgrounds to interact and strengthen social bonds.
In several countries, Diwali celebrations extend beyond the communities traditionally observing the festival, welcoming neighbours and people of different nationalities to participate.
The gathering was particularly significant in the UAE, a multicultural society where people from diverse nationalities and cultural backgrounds live and work together.
The international celebration in Dubai demonstrated how festivals can serve as bridges between cultures, strengthen people-to-people connections and promote mutual understanding.
The event also highlighted the contribution of the Indian diaspora in sharing India’s cultural heritage with the world, reinforcing Diwali’s message of light, peace, friendship and global harmony.
