Mar 12: A one-day refresher training programme under the Adolescence Education Programme was organised at District Institute of Education and Training Samba to strengthen awareness and guidance for adolescents in schools across the district.

The programme was conducted in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education and the Jammu and Kashmir AIDS Control Society, while the orientation event was coordinated by the office of the Chief Education Officer.

Participation from Schools Across Samba

The training programme witnessed the participation of lecturers, masters and teachers representing around 50 Government Higher Secondary Schools and High Schools of Samba district. The initiative aimed to equip educators with the necessary knowledge and counselling skills required to guide students during the crucial stage of adolescence.

Yashpaul Sharma, Chief Education Officer Samba, attended the programme as the Chief Guest.

Teachers’ Role in Supporting Adolescents

Addressing the participants, the Chief Education Officer highlighted the important role teachers play in shaping the emotional and psychological well-being of young students.

He stressed that schools should act as safe and supportive spaces where adolescents can receive guidance on mental health, life skills, emotional well-being and awareness regarding substance abuse and other health-related concerns.

According to him, educators must actively engage with students and create an environment where they feel comfortable discussing personal challenges and seeking guidance.

Expert Sessions on Key Adolescent Issues

The programme featured several expert sessions delivered by resource persons from the School Education Department, DIET and the Department of Health Services.

These sessions covered major components of the Adolescence Education Programme, including life skills education, adolescent health awareness, mental well-being and preventive strategies against risky behaviours.

Participants were also sensitised about practical methods to communicate effectively with adolescents and address issues related to peer pressure, emotional stress and health awareness.

Practical Insights for Implementation in Schools

During the programme, Dr Yasir Hamid Sirwal, Deputy Director Academics, delivered an insightful session focusing on the objectives and practical implementation of the programme within schools.

He encouraged teachers to adopt interactive approaches while engaging with students and to promote open dialogue within classrooms. Such initiatives, he noted, can help build confidence among adolescents and enable them to make informed decisions regarding their health and future.

Teachers to Serve as School Counsellors

Following the training, the participating educators will act as school counsellors and resource persons in their respective institutions. Their role will include spreading awareness, guiding students and implementing various activities under the Adolescence Education Programme.

Through this initiative, the School Education Department aims to strengthen the support system available to adolescents and encourage responsible behaviour among students.

Collective Commitment for Student Well-being

The programme concluded with a collective pledge by teachers and officials to continue working collaboratively for the well-being of adolescents in schools across Samba district.

Authorities expressed hope that such training programmes will contribute to creating healthier, informed and confident youth capable of making responsible life choices.
