DEC 7: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, chaired a review meeting to evaluate the functioning and progress of the Handicrafts & Handloom Department, calling for stronger inter-departmental coordination and more robust strategies to promote Kashmir’s rich craft heritage.

During the meeting, the Divisional Commissioner emphasized the need to align the Handicrafts & Handloom (H&H) calendar of activities with the Tourism Department’s promotional roadmap. He said that a unified approach would significantly boost the visibility of local crafts, attract more visitors to artisan clusters, and enhance the overall experience of tourists seeking authentic Kashmiri culture.

Enhancing Craft Promotion Through Tourism Synergy

Garg highlighted that Kashmir’s handicrafts—ranging from Pashmina, Kani shawls, and Sozni embroidery to wood carving, papier-mâché, and carpet weaving—remain among the region’s strongest cultural assets. To strengthen their market reach, he called for close collaboration with tour operators, hoteliers, travel companies, and tourism service providers.

He directed the departments to design joint events, craft trails, and live demonstrations that can be featured on tourism itineraries. Increased coordination, he said, would create new opportunities for both artisans and local businesses while enhancing tourists’ understanding of Kashmiri craftsmanship.

Focus on “Know Your Artisan” Initiatives

The Divisional Commissioner reiterated the importance of expanding “Know Your Artisan” initiatives, which allow visitors and buyers to engage directly with craftsmen. He said such programs help build transparency, trust, and appreciation for handmade products, while also providing artisans with direct market exposure.

Garg urged the department to scale up artisan outreach programs, develop better storytelling around craft traditions, and use digital platforms to bring attention to authentic and GI-tagged products.

Strict Action Against Fake Handloom Products

Expressing concern over the growing circulation of counterfeit handloom products in the market, Garg directed for strict enforcement measures to protect the identity of genuine Kashmiri crafts. He called for intensified inspections, penalties for sellers of fake goods, and awareness campaigns to educate consumers about authentic handloom indicators.

He emphasized that safeguarding the integrity of the sector is essential for maintaining Kashmir’s global reputation and ensuring artisans receive the rightful value for their work.

Strengthening Stakeholder Collaboration

The Divisional Commissioner encouraged the department to maintain regular coordination with artisan associations, cooperative societies, craft clusters, and local businesses. He noted that meaningful stakeholder engagement is crucial for developing sustainable, market-driven strategies that address the challenges faced by the craft community.

He also highlighted the need for improved skill training, modern design inputs, and better access to credit and online marketplaces, ensuring artisans can compete effectively in both national and international markets.

A Push for Growth and Global Outreach

Concluding the meeting, Garg expressed confidence that a collaborative, tourism-integrated strategy would significantly uplift the Handicrafts & Handloom sector in Kashmir. By enhancing visibility, promoting authenticity, and strengthening market linkages, the administration aims to create a more vibrant and economically secure future for local artisans.
