SEP 01: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today reached Ramban to personally assess the condition of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), which has suffered extensive damage due to recent incessant rains and subsequent landslides. The highway, considered the lifeline of Jammu and Kashmir, has witnessed multiple blockages, severely affecting traffic movement and the supply of essential commodities to the Valley.
Upon arrival, the Chief Minister conducted an on-spot review of the restoration works being carried out by the concerned agencies. He was briefed by senior officials about the challenges faced in clearing debris, stabilizing slopes, and repairing the damaged stretches of the highway. The Chief Minister expressed concern over the hardships faced by commuters, traders, and residents of the Valley due to the prolonged disruption.
Omar Abdullah emphasized the urgency of accelerating the pace of restoration to ensure the resumption of smooth vehicular traffic at the earliest. He directed the authorities to deploy additional manpower and machinery where required and to maintain round-the-clock efforts until full connectivity is restored. Stressing the importance of coordination, he instructed various departments including PWD, BRO, and district administration to work in close synergy.
Highlighting the critical role of the highway in maintaining uninterrupted supplies of food, medicines, fuel, and other essentials, the Chief Minister assured that the government is committed to minimizing public inconvenience. He also interacted with local residents and commuters stranded along the route, assuring them of swift redressal measures.
Officials accompanying him informed that multiple landslide-prone zones have been identified, and permanent measures are being planned to strengthen the road infrastructure. The Chief Minister urged engineers to adopt long-term solutions, including improved slope management and protective structures, to avoid repeated disruptions in the future.
The visit underscores the government’s proactive approach to dealing with natural calamities and infrastructure challenges, while also reflecting the administration’s commitment to keeping Jammu and Kashmir’s vital road connectivity functional under testing condition.
