June 27: In response to the sharp rise in water levels due to continuous heavy rainfall, authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have opened the gates of the Salal Dam located in Reasi district. The move comes as a precautionary measure to manage the inflow and outflow of water in the Chenab River, which has been swelling rapidly due to persistent rains in the region and upstream catchment areas.
The dam management, in coordination with the local administration, issued alerts to downstream areas to remain vigilant. Villagers and residents living near the riverbanks in Reasi, Ramban, and Jammu districts have been advised to avoid venturing near the river and take necessary safety precautions. District authorities have activated disaster management teams and are closely monitoring the situation.
Officials confirmed that controlled release of water is being carried out to avoid any emergency flood-like situation, adding that all measures are being taken to ensure public safety. So far, there are no reports of damage or loss, but continuous rainfall may necessitate further action.
The Salal Dam, a major hydroelectric power project on the Chenab River, plays a critical role in energy generation and water regulation. Such releases are part of standard operating procedures during high monsoon inflows.
The Meteorological Department has predicted more rainfall in the coming days, especially in the Jammu division, which could lead to additional rise in river levels. Authorities have urged the public to stay updated through official advisories and avoid spreading rumours.
