OCT 28:In a significant step toward empowering women and supporting underprivileged families, the Government of Jammu & Kashmir has removed the educational eligibility criterion under the Marriage Assistance Scheme. This reform ensures that poor girls from economically weaker sections can now avail financial assistance for their marriage, irrespective of their educational qualifications.

The decision reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive welfare policies and its vision to extend social benefits to every deserving household. Earlier, the scheme provided monetary support to poor girls only if they had attained a specific level of education. With the removal of this condition, the scheme’s coverage has been substantially widened, allowing more marginalized families to receive timely assistance during one of the most financially challenging phases of life.

Officials emphasized that the reform aims to reduce economic distress among low-income families and promote dignity and equality for women. It acknowledges that financial constraints, not education, often determine the ability of families to conduct marriages, particularly in rural and remote areas.

The government’s proactive move is expected to benefit thousands of families across Jammu & Kashmir, especially in regions where access to formal education remains limited due to socio-economic challenges. This change aligns with the broader social welfare vision of ensuring that no girl is left behind in availing the benefits of state-sponsored assistance programs.

By removing restrictive conditions and simplifying the application process, the government is reinforcing its commitment to women empowerment, social justice, and inclusive development. The expanded Marriage Assistance Scheme is not only a financial support mechanism but also a strong message of compassion and equality — ensuring that every girl, irrespective of her educational background, receives the support she deserves.
