AUG 29: In a significant step towards enhancing maritime cooperation, Indian Naval Ships INS Tamal and INS Surat arrived at the Port of Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on August 27 and 28, 2025, respectively. This visit highlights India’s growing naval diplomacy and its commitment to fostering strong defence relations with strategic partners in the Gulf region.
INS Tamal, the eighth vessel in the Talwar-class of stealth frigates, is known for its agility and advanced combat systems, designed for multi-role operations. INS Surat represents a milestone in India’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities, being the latest guided-missile destroyer constructed by Indian shipyards.
During the port call, personnel from both ships will participate in a variety of engagements with the Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF) and Saudi Border Guards. These include professional interactions, sports fixtures, and familiarisation visits to Saudi naval establishments. The interactions are aimed at building mutual understanding, sharing operational best practices, and exploring opportunities for future collaboration.
The Indian Navy will also host a cultural event for Saudi naval dignitaries, diplomats, government officials, and members of the Indian diaspora in Saudi Arabia. This initiative is intended to strengthen people-to-people ties and foster goodwill between the two nations.
This visit comes at a time of deepening strategic relations between India and Saudi Arabia, particularly in the defence and maritime domains. As both countries expand their roles in maintaining regional security and maritime stability, such interactions serve as important platforms for trust-building and mutual cooperation.
India continues to engage proactively with friendly navies around the world, aligning with its vision of a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. The ongoing engagement with Saudi Arabia adds further momentum to this vision.
