Srinagar, September 21, 2026: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly was adjourned for the day on Monday after disruptions and protests during the opening day of the Autumn Session. The House is scheduled to reconvene at 10 am on Tuesday, September 22, with legislative and government business set to continue according to the listed agenda.
The seven-sitting Autumn Session began in Srinagar on Monday. The proceedings opened with obituary references to former ministers who passed away during the inter-session period, followed by Question Hour. The House later witnessed repeated interruptions as members raised a range of public and political issues.
Protests During Question Hour
Proceedings were disrupted after opposition members raised concerns over issues including National Health Mission (NHM) employees, outsourcing of government jobs, regularisation of daily-wage workers and electricity tariffs. Members also sought discussions on matters affecting public services and employment.
The disruptions led to exchanges among members, with the Speaker, Abdul Rahim Rather, repeatedly urging legislators to maintain order and allow Question Hour to proceed. The protests continued, eventually prompting the Chair to adjourn the House for the day.
The opening-day developments have set the tone for a session in which several issues concerning governance, employment, public services and other matters are expected to receive attention from legislators.
House to Resume on September 22
The Assembly is scheduled to meet again at 10 am on Tuesday. September 22 has been designated for Government Business under the provisional calendar.
The Autumn Session is scheduled to run from September 21 to September 30, with seven sittings spread across the 10-day period. The calendar includes dedicated days for government business, private members’ bills and private members’ resolutions.
With several issues already raised on the opening day, the coming sittings are expected to see further discussions on matters concerning Jammu and Kashmir and its administration.
