OCT 04: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, successfully concluded its Online Short-Term Internship Programme (OSTI) for September 2025, with 74 university students from 21 States and Union Territories completing the intensive two-week programme. The internship, inaugurated on August 22, 2025, by NHRC Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal, aimed to enhance awareness and understanding of human rights issues among young citizens.

Addressing the valedictory session as Chief Guest, NHRC Member Smt Vijaya Bharathi Sayani commended the interns for their enthusiasm and dedication. She emphasized NHRC’s vital role in safeguarding justice, equality, and dignity, particularly in areas like women’s and children’s rights, mental health, custodial justice, and empowerment of marginalized communities.

Highlighting the diverse learning experiences, Smt Sayani appreciated the expert-led sessions covering psychology, forensic science, and business and human rights, which provided participants with multidisciplinary insights. Urging the youth to be “vigilant, vocal, and value-driven,” she called upon them to stand up against injustice and contribute to building an inclusive and equitable society rooted in constitutional values.

Smt Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak, Joint Secretary, NHRC, presented the internship report detailing interactive sessions, workshops, and virtual field visits to institutions like Tihar Jail, a Delhi Police Station, and Asha Kiran Shelter Home, offering participants a real-world perspective on human rights mechanisms and challenges.

The programme also included competitions in book reviews, group research, and declamation, fostering analytical and advocacy skills among students. The OSTI continues to serve as a flagship NHRC initiative to equip youth with practical knowledge, global perspectives, and a deeper commitment to protecting human rights in India.
