May 31: In a landmark move to enhance connectivity and administrative efficiency, the Ministry of Railways has officially designated Jammu as the 70th railway division under the Northern Railway zone, effective from June 1, 2025.
This strategic decision marks a significant shift in the railway administration of the region. Previously, the rail network in Jammu and Kashmir was managed by the Firozpur Division. With the establishment of the Jammu Railway Division, the jurisdiction now encompasses a total rail network of 742.1 km, covering critical sections such as Pathankot–Jammu–Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla, Bhogpur Sirwal–Pathankot, Batala–Pathankot, and the narrow gauge Pathankot–Joginder Nagar (Kangra Valley Railway).
The inauguration of the Jammu Railway Division by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 6, 2025, underscores the government’s commitment to bolstering infrastructure in the region. E. Srinivas has been appointed as the first Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of the new division, bringing experienced leadership to oversee its operations.
The establishment of this division is expected to have far-reaching implications for the socio-economic development of Jammu and Kashmir. By decentralizing administrative functions, the new division aims to expedite decision-making processes, improve maintenance and operational efficiency, and enhance passenger services. Moreover, it is anticipated to create employment opportunities and stimulate economic activities in the region.
This development aligns with the broader vision of integrating Jammu and Kashmir more closely with the rest of the country through improved infrastructure. The Jammu–Baramulla railway line, which connects the Kashmir Valley with Jammu Tawi and further to the national network, is a testament to this vision.
In conclusion, the creation of the Jammu Railway Division represents a proactive step towards regional empowerment and national integration. It reflects a strategic approach to infrastructure development, aiming to bring about tangible improvements in connectivity, administration, and economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir.
