JUNE 17: A 90-member Indian Army contingent has departed for France to participate in the eighth edition of Exercise SHAKTI, the biennial joint military training between the Indian and French Armies. The exercise is scheduled to take place from 18th June to 1st July 2025 at Camp Larzac, La Cavalerie, France.
Representing India in this high-level bilateral engagement is a battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, along with personnel from various other arms and services. The French Army contingent, also comprising 90 troops, will be led by personnel from the 13th Foreign Legion Half-Brigade (13th DBLE).
Exercise SHAKTI is a cornerstone of Indo-French defence cooperation and aims to foster interoperability, mutual understanding, and operational coordination between the two militaries. As a biennial engagement, it provides an important platform for the armed forces of both countries to conduct joint training operations in realistic combat environments.
The focus of this year’s edition is on sub-conventional warfare scenarios in semi-urban terrain, in line with Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, which deals with actions regarding threats to peace and acts of aggression. The joint drills are designed to simulate real-world contingencies, enhance tactical proficiency, and encourage the exchange of best practices.
Participants will train together on tactical maneuvers, counter-insurgency operations, and humanitarian aid protocols, using next-generation equipment and modern military technology. The engagement is also aimed at strengthening physical endurance, enhancing team coordination, and building professional camaraderie.
Beyond its tactical objectives, Exercise SHAKTI plays a pivotal role in boosting military-to-military relationships and reflects the deepening strategic partnership between India and France. It serves not only as a rehearsal of joint operations but also as a symbol of shared democratic values and commitment to global peace and security.
Exercise SHAKTI-VIII highlights the growing trust and synergy between the two nations’ armed forces. Through such collaborative efforts, India and France continue to reinforce their defence diplomacy and shared vision for regional and global stability.
