7 June: Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda has reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the availability of safe, nutritious, and hygienic food for citizens across the country. He emphasized that food safety remains a key component of public health and is essential for improving the overall well-being of the population.
Addressing a gathering focused on food safety and public health, Nadda highlighted the importance of maintaining high standards in food production, processing, storage, and distribution. He said the government is continuously working to strengthen food safety mechanisms and regulatory frameworks to protect consumers from health risks associated with unsafe food.
The Health Minister noted that access to hygienic and quality food is fundamental to a healthy society. He stressed that ensuring food safety requires coordinated efforts from government agencies, food businesses, manufacturers, retailers, and consumers.
According to Nadda, various initiatives have been undertaken to improve monitoring systems, enhance food testing infrastructure, and increase awareness about safe food practices. These efforts are aimed at ensuring that food products reaching consumers meet prescribed quality and safety standards.
He also underlined the role of technology and innovation in strengthening food safety systems. Modern testing methods, digital monitoring tools, and improved supply chain management are helping authorities enhance transparency and accountability within the food sector.
The minister observed that food safety has become increasingly important as consumer awareness grows and food supply chains become more complex. Strong regulatory oversight, he said, is necessary to maintain public confidence and safeguard health.
Nadda further emphasized the need to promote good hygiene practices throughout the food ecosystem. From production and transportation to storage and retail, maintaining cleanliness and quality standards is essential for preventing contamination and reducing health risks.
Public health experts have consistently highlighted the link between safe food and disease prevention. Contaminated or improperly handled food can lead to foodborne illnesses, nutritional deficiencies, and other health complications. As a result, food safety remains a critical aspect of national healthcare priorities.
The government has also been encouraging awareness campaigns to educate consumers about healthy eating habits, food labeling, and safe handling practices. Such initiatives aim to empower people to make informed decisions regarding the food they consume.
Industry stakeholders attending the event welcomed the government’s focus on food safety and emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards throughout the supply chain. They noted that consumer trust depends heavily on the quality and safety of food products.
Nadda reaffirmed that the government will continue to strengthen regulatory institutions and support initiatives that promote food quality, hygiene, and public health. He stressed that ensuring safe food for every citizen is a shared responsibility that requires active participation from all stakeholders.
The minister concluded by expressing confidence that continued collaboration and awareness will help build a stronger food safety culture across the country and contribute to better health outcomes for millions of people.
