JUNE 01: In a significant blow to cross-border drug trafficking, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted a major narcotics consignment in Mizoram, continuing its relentless crackdown on the drug menace in the region. Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officials seized 9.72 kilograms of Methamphetamine tablets from a Mahindra XUV500 at Seling, located on the Aizawl-Champhai stretch of National Highway-6, on May 30, 2025.

The recovered contraband, which consists of 10 neatly packed parcels of Methamphetamine tablets, was cleverly concealed within a specially fabricated cavity in the rear seat of the vehicle. Upon inspection, DRI officers discovered the hidden chamber and immediately secured the drugs and the vehicle. The total street value of the seized substance is estimated at around ₹9.72 crore in the international illicit drug market.

One individual has been arrested in connection with the seizure under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Authorities have initiated further investigation to determine the wider network involved in this smuggling operation.

Preliminary findings indicate that the consignment was smuggled into Mizoram from Myanmar through the Zokhawthar border sector — a known corridor for narcotics trafficking across the Indo-Myanmar border. The use of modified vehicles and concealed compartments highlights the evolving tactics adopted by drug syndicates to evade law enforcement.

This seizure is part of a larger pattern observed by DRI in the northeastern region, especially in border states like Mizoram which are increasingly being targeted as transit points for international drug trafficking. Since January 2025 alone, DRI has seized narcotics worth more than ₹72 crore in Mizoram, which includes significant quantities of Methamphetamine and Heroin. A total of seven individuals have been arrested in connection with these seizures over the past five months.

The NDPS Act prescribes stringent penalties for those involved in drug trafficking, including rigorous imprisonment of up to 10 years, and heavy fines. DRI officials reaffirmed their commitment to curbing the spread of narcotics through continued vigilance and inter-agency coordination.

As enforcement agencies strengthen surveillance and intelligence operations across India’s northeastern borders, efforts like this serve as a deterrent to organized drug smuggling and reinforce the government’s zero-tolerance approach towards narcotics-related crimes.
