Jan 14:Jammu and Kashmir witnessed heightened security activity on Wednesday evening after Indian Army troops engaged multiple suspected Pakistani drones that crossed into Indian territory along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district. The incident underscores persistent security challenges along the border and the Army’s continued vigilance against aerial intrusions.
According to Army officials, the drones were first detected hovering over the Manjakote sector of Rajouri district during the evening hours. Troops stationed in forward areas swiftly responded by opening fire as part of standard counter-drone protocols. The drones reportedly remained airborne briefly before retreating towards Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), avoiding further escalation.
Defence sources revealed that the intrusions occurred around 7 pm when multiple drones entered Indian airspace over the Dunga Gala area in the Chingus region of Rajouri. The Army immediately activated counter-Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) measures, including kinetic responses, forcing the drones to withdraw. No damage to civilian property or military installations was reported.
The latest incident comes amid growing concerns over repeated drone sightings along the Jammu sector over the past several days. Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi recently raised the issue with Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO), firmly conveying India’s objections to the recurring aerial activity near the border. The Indian Army reportedly emphasised that such actions violate existing confidence-building measures and pose a threat to regional stability.
Officials noted that drone intrusions are increasingly being used for reconnaissance and potential smuggling of arms, ammunition, or narcotics, particularly in sensitive border districts. As a result, the Army has further strengthened surveillance mechanisms, integrating ground-based radars, electronic monitoring systems, and rapid-response units to neutralise emerging threats.
Security forces remain on high alert across the LoC and International Border in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in districts like Rajouri and Poonch, which have seen heightened cross-border activity in recent years. Continuous monitoring and proactive engagement form a key part of the Army’s strategy to safeguard territorial integrity and civilian safety.
Military sources reiterated that any attempt to breach Indian airspace will be dealt with decisively and in accordance with established rules of engagement. The Army’s prompt response to the drone sightings reflects its operational readiness and commitment to maintaining peace while countering hostile actions.
As investigations continue, defence authorities are closely analysing the incident to determine the drones’ exact purpose and origin. Meanwhile, security agencies have urged residents in border areas to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local authorities.
The incident once again highlights the evolving nature of border security challenges and the Indian Army’s preparedness to counter both conventional and emerging threats along the Line of Control.
