Feb 4: BJP Spokesperson and Convenor, International Affairs, Gaurav Gupta, has welcomed the recent India-US trade understanding, describing it as a constructive and forward-looking development that strengthens economic and strategic ties between the two nations.
In a statement issued here today, Gaurav Gupta hailed the reported decision to reduce reciprocal tariffs on Indian exports from 25 per cent to 18 per cent, along with the scrapping of an additional 25 per cent punitive duty. He said the move reflects growing trust, cooperation, and strategic alignment between India and the United States, the world’s two largest democracies.
Calling the development a major relief for Indian exporters and industries, Gupta said the tariff cut will enhance the competitiveness of Indian goods in the US market and provide a strong push to economic growth. He noted that the decision comes at a time when global trade faces uncertainty, making such cooperative steps even more significant.
Gupta said the reported trade understanding between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump is being widely viewed as an important effort to ease trade tensions and promote economic stability. According to reports, the tariff rationalisation forms part of a broader agreement aimed at expanding bilateral trade and improving market access between the two countries.
Highlighting sector-wise benefits, Gupta said industries such as engineering goods, textiles, chemicals, and automobile components are expected to gain significantly, as these sectors have strong export linkages with the US. He added that the move could help reverse earlier tariff escalations that had created uncertainty among exporters and affected long-term planning.
The BJP leader further stated that strengthening economic cooperation with global partners like the United States aligns with India’s long-term vision of boosting manufacturing, expanding international trade, and enhancing technological collaboration. He said such agreements complement flagship initiatives like Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat by creating new export opportunities.
Gupta emphasized that improved trade relations between India and the US will not only deepen economic engagement but also reinforce strategic and diplomatic ties, contributing positively to global economic stability and mutual prosperity.
He expressed confidence that constructive diplomatic engagement and dialogue-driven solutions will open new avenues for investment, innovation, and employment generation in both countries. Gupta also appreciated the leadership of both nations for adopting a pragmatic approach to resolving trade differences through cooperation and mutual understanding.
Concluding his remarks, Gaurav Gupta said that India’s growing global stature and proactive foreign policy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi have played a key role in strengthening international partnerships and ensuring greater economic opportunities for the country.
