AUG 30: Commissioner Secretary, Industries & Commerce (I&C), Vikramjit Singh, today visited Bandipora district to review the progress of the Wool and Tweed Cluster being developed under the Jhelum Tawi Flood Recovery Project (JTFRP). The cluster aims to revive the region’s traditional handloom and handicraft sector by providing artisans with modern facilities, better skill development opportunities, and enhanced market linkages.
During the visit, Vikramjit Singh interacted with artisans and stakeholders associated with the cluster. He listened to their concerns, took feedback on the challenges faced in production and marketing, and assured them of strong government support. The Commissioner Secretary emphasized that the cluster will not only safeguard traditional weaving practices but also help artisans increase their income through improved infrastructure, training, and branding support.
Highlighting the role of the National Handloom & Handicrafts Development (NH&HD) Programme, Singh underlined the importance of providing artisans with capacity building, design innovation, and wider market access. He urged officials to focus on creating sustainable livelihood opportunities by connecting local crafts with both domestic and global markets.
The Commissioner Secretary also inspected the upcoming Industrial Estate at Chewa Sumbal, reviewing ongoing development works and infrastructure being created for prospective entrepreneurs. He stressed that the new estate will provide a significant boost to local industry, generate employment, and encourage youth to explore entrepreneurship opportunities. Singh directed concerned officers to expedite works, ensure quality standards, and facilitate a business-friendly environment for investors.
He reaffirmed that the Government under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s leadership is committed to strengthening J&K’s industrial and handicraft ecosystem by providing artisans and entrepreneurs with modern infrastructure, financial support, and skill development opportunities.
The visit brought a sense of encouragement among artisans and entrepreneurs in Bandipora, who welcomed the administration’s proactive outreach and commitment to empowering traditional industries while promoting new-age entrepreneurship.
