OCT 11:Chief Secretary Jammu and Kashmir, Atal Dulloo, recently reviewed the transportation of fruits from the Valley, emphasizing the need for seamless movement to major markets. During the review, he directed that no fruit-laden trucks should be stranded along National Highway 44, stressing the importance of ensuring priority passage for perishable goods.
The Chief Secretary instructed concerned authorities to adopt measures for the timely clearance of any vehicles that might face delays due to traffic congestion or other logistical challenges. He underlined that delays in fruit transport not only affect farmers’ incomes but also disrupt the supply chain and impact market prices across the country.
In addition to road transport, Atal Dulloo encouraged exploring alternative freight options, including rail links, to enhance connectivity with key markets such as Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru. He highlighted that rail-based transport could provide a faster, cost-effective, and more reliable means of moving perishable commodities over long distances, ensuring fruits reach markets in optimal condition.
The review also focused on improving coordination among transport departments, traffic authorities, and fruit traders to create an efficient supply chain network. The Chief Secretary urged for proactive measures during peak fruit season to prevent bottlenecks, minimize wastage, and maintain a smooth flow of agricultural produce from the Valley.
Atal Dulloo’s directives reflect the administration’s commitment to supporting the horticulture sector in Jammu and Kashmir. By prioritizing the timely movement of fruits and exploring modern transport solutions, the government aims to strengthen the region’s economy, enhance farmers’ livelihoods, and ensure a steady supply of fresh produce to consumers across the country.
The meeting concluded with a clear mandate for all departments to remain vigilant and responsive, ensuring that fruits from the Valley reach markets without undue delay. Authorities were asked to implement these measures immediately, underscoring the importance of a robust transportation system for sustaining Jammu and Kashmir’s horticultural prosperity.
