Culture Department Showcases Heritage Through Numismatic Treasures in Jammu

APRIL 25: In a unique celebration of India’s rich historical and cultural legacy, the Department of Culture, Jammu & Kashmir, inaugurated a two-day Rare Coins Exhibition at Kala Kendra, Jammu. The event was formally inaugurated by Principal Secretary Culture, Brij Mohan Sharma, as part of the observance of World Numismatic Week–2025.Organized by Kala Kendra under the aegis of the Culture Department, the exhibition has drawn a diverse audience of history enthusiasts, artists, collectors, and academicians.

Speaking at the inauguration, Brij Mohan Sharma highlighted the significance of coins in understanding the fabric of ancient societies. “Each coin is more than a piece of metal—it is a fragment of our cultural identity and historical journey,” he said. He emphasized that the inscriptions, materials, shapes, and imagery found on coins provide insight into trade, politics, religion, and daily life across centuries.

He further encouraged collectors and cultural organizations to actively collaborate with the government to overcome challenges faced by the heritage community. On this occasion, he announced a new scheme by the Department of Culture aimed at recognizing and rewarding NGOs dedicated to cultural preservation and promotion.

Dr. Javaid Rahi, Secretary of Kala Kendra, informed the audience that the exhibition showcases approximately 1,000 rare coins, spanning various dynasties and historical periods. These include coins from the Indo-Greek era, Kanishka dynasty, Mughal Empire, British rule, Sikh and Dogra reigns, and post-Independence India.

Renowned collectors such as Dr. Suresh Kumar Abrol (Shashvat Art Gallery), Inder Singh (Himalayan Heritage Museum), Sudhir Gupta, Ashok Kumar Koul, and Ramesh Kumar Raina are among those whose collections are featured. Their valuable exhibits are displayed at the Master Sansar Chand Gallery within Kala Kendra.

The event was also graced by Special Secretaries Trishla Kundal and Malikzada Sheeraz ul Haq, as well as noted literary and cultural personalities like Khalid Hussain, A.S. Amn, Liaqat Jafri, and Raj Kumar Behropia, who praised the initiative and spoke on the cultural importance of numismatics.

The exhibition will remain open for public viewing until the evening of April 25, 2025.
