MARCH 03: A two-day training programme on “Computer Skill Enhancement Programme – Level I & II, Cyber Laws & Appreciation & Handling of Digital Evidence and e-Courts (ECT_13_2024; ECT_14_2024; & ECT_16_2024)” concluded today at the J&K Judicial Academy in Janipur, Jammu. The programme was specifically organized for Civil Judges from Jammu province, aimed at enhancing their digital proficiency and knowledge of cyber laws, digital evidence, and e-Court systems.

On the second day of the training, the sessions were conducted by Nisheeth Dixit, an Advocate from Delhi with expertise in cyber laws. He provided a comprehensive overview of cybercrimes and the relevant cyber laws, including the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000, and provisions from the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and BNS 2023. Dixit elaborated on the increasing sophistication of cyber offenses in today’s digital world, noting that as technology evolves, so do cybercrimes. These offenses include hacking, identity theft, cyber fraud, and content-related offenses such as child pornography, xenophobia, and racism.

During the training, Dixit highlighted the importance of understanding the legal framework established by the IT Act and how it is applied to address cybercrimes. He explained the intricacies of handling digital evidence and the importance of maintaining its integrity for use in judicial proceedings. He also provided insight into the role of e-Courts and how digital platforms are transforming the judiciary’s ability to handle cases efficiently, particularly in terms of processing and storing digital evidence.

The programme also emphasized the need for Civil Judges to stay updated with the rapidly evolving technological landscape, as it plays an increasingly important role in the legal system. The sessions included practical insights into the appreciation and handling of digital evidence, teaching participants how to approach and examine evidence in cybercrime cases and ensuring its authenticity and admissibility in court.

By the end of the training, the participants gained valuable knowledge on navigating the complexities of cybercrimes, understanding the importance of cyber laws, and utilizing e-Court systems to streamline the legal process. The programme was an important step toward enhancing the digital capabilities of Jammu’s judicial officers, ensuring they are well-equipped to handle the challenges posed by cybercrimes and digital evidence in the modern judicial system.

This initiative underscores the importance of continuous capacity building for judicial officers, enabling them to effectively manage and adjudicate cases in an increasingly digital world.
