JULY 31: In a major leap towards sustainable maritime infrastructure, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla, today commissioned India’s first Make-in-India 1 Megawatt Green Hydrogen Plant. This groundbreaking facility was inaugurated by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, alongside Minister of State Shri Shantanu Thakur, Secretary T.K. Ramachandran, DPA Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh, and senior officials from Larsen & Toubro (L&T).

With this commissioning, DPA becomes the first Indian port to operate a megawatt-scale Green Hydrogen facility, reinforcing the country’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions and fulfilling the Maritime India Vision 2030.

The plant, built under the Make-in-India initiative, is capable of producing around 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually and is expected to significantly contribute to decarbonising maritime operations and improving energy self-reliance.

Union Minister Sonowal highlighted the speed and efficiency of the implementation, noting that the 1 MW module was operationalised just four months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a larger 10 MW plant in Bhuj in May 2025. He described the project as a model of speed, scale, and skill, emphasizing its role in establishing a future-ready green hydrogen ecosystem.

MoS Shri Shantanu Thakur echoed the sentiment, calling it a proud moment for both Gujarat and the nation, and praised the project’s alignment with India’s broader clean energy vision.

The Minister also acknowledged DPA’s earlier milestones, such as India’s first Make-in-India electric Green Tug, and applauded the engineering excellence of L&T in executing the hydrogen facility.

As India strengthens its global leadership in green energy and innovation, the Deendayal Port Authority stands at the forefront, setting benchmarks for other ports to emulate and driving the nation’s transition towards a cleaner, greener maritime future.
