September 5, 2025:
In the wake of heavy rains and flash floods that caused significant disruption across Jammu city, Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar IAS, undertook an extensive tour of the worst-hit localities on Wednesday. The visit aimed at assessing the on-ground situation, reviewing the status of essential services, and ensuring speedy restoration efforts in coordination with various line departments.
The Div Com visited several low-lying and severely affected neighborhoods where floodwaters had damaged roads, disrupted household supplies, and impacted civic infrastructure. During the tour, he interacted directly with residents, listening to their grievances and assuring them that every possible step was being taken to restore normalcy at the earliest. Citizens highlighted issues related to contaminated drinking water, erratic power supply, and sanitation challenges, which were noted for immediate resolution.
A major focus of the inspection was on Water Filtration Plants and Water Supply Schemes, many of which were temporarily rendered non-functional due to heavy inflow and siltation caused by floods. Reviewing the situation, the Divisional Commissioner directed the Jal Shakti Department to restore these plants to their full operational capacity without delay, stressing that safe and potable drinking water remains the foremost priority in the post-flood scenario.
Similarly, he instructed the Power Development Department (PDD) to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply, particularly in areas where pumping stations and treatment plants depend on power for functioning. He emphasized that both departments must work in close coordination to prevent cascading effects on public services.
Ramesh Kumar also called for regular monitoring of water quality to prevent any outbreak of water-borne diseases. He directed health authorities to remain vigilant and keep mobile medical teams ready to cater to affected localities, in line with the broader disaster preparedness strategy.
The Div Com highlighted that the administration’s immediate objective is to provide relief and restore critical services, but equally important is to build long-term resilience against such natural calamities. He urged departments to conduct technical assessments of vulnerable infrastructure and undertake corrective measures for the future.
Reiterating the government’s commitment, he assured the people of Jammu that every effort is being made to normalize civic life. “The administration stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the citizens. We are committed to restoring services swiftly and ensuring that the hardships faced due to floods are addressed on priority,” he said.
