SEP 08: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Monday visited the Kangri area of Rajouri district to meet the families affected by the recent tragic landslide that claimed two lives. Expressing deep condolences, he conveyed the government’s solidarity with the bereaved households and assured them that every possible support would be extended to help them cope with this irreparable loss.

As an immediate measure, the Deputy Chief Minister handed over financial assistance of ₹4 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased under the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF). He reiterated that the government remains committed to standing by the affected families in their hour of grief and will ensure that relief reaches them without delay.

During his visit, Surinder Choudhary also interacted with local residents who highlighted the growing vulnerability of the area to frequent landslides and road blockages. Responding to these concerns, he directed the Public Works Department (PWD) and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to expedite road restoration works on war footing. He further instructed the authorities to identify and strengthen all vulnerable stretches to minimize the risk of such calamities in the future.

The Deputy Chief Minister underlined that the administration is prioritizing the safety of commuters and local residents, particularly in hilly regions prone to landslides. He assured that long-term mitigation measures would be put in place, including proper drainage, slope stabilization, and regular monitoring of susceptible road sections.

Highlighting the government’s proactive approach towards disaster management, he stressed the importance of preparedness and preventive infrastructure in reducing risks. He urged officials to maintain close coordination with local communities and ensure timely communication during emergencies.

The visit of the Deputy Chief Minister brought a sense of reassurance to the families and residents of Kangri. His message was clear: while natural disasters cannot always be prevented, strong governance, prompt relief, and effective preventive measures can go a long way in safeguarding lives and livelihoods.
