AUG 21: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday held an interaction with a delegation from the Janata Dal (Secular) at Nirvachan Sadan, New Delhi. The delegation, led by Shri K.R. Shivakumar, National General Secretary and Authorised Representative of JD(S), presented the party’s suggestions before the Commission. The discussions were chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar along with Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi.
This meeting is part of an ongoing initiative by the ECI to regularly engage with the presidents and authorised representatives of various National and State political parties. The objective is to foster constructive dialogue, enabling political stakeholders to share their inputs and concerns directly with the Commission. This step aligns with the Commission’s broader vision of making the electoral process more transparent, inclusive, and efficient within the existing legal framework.
The Commission highlighted that over the last 150 days, it has conducted an extensive round of interactions at different levels of the electoral machinery. These included 40 meetings chaired by Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs), 800 by District Election Officers (DEOs), and 3,879 by Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), engaging with more than 28,000 representatives of political parties across the country.
The structured engagement began earlier this year with national-level parties, including the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Communist Party of India (Marxist), National People’s Party (NPP), and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). State parties such as the Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, AIMIM, DMK, Shiv Sena, Biju Janata Dal, and others have also held similar consultations.
By continuing these consultations, the ECI reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening India’s democratic framework, ensuring wider participation of stakeholders, and enhancing trust in the country’s electoral system.
