Dec 18: In a significant boost to railway infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, the Centre has informed the Lok Sabha that four railway stations—Budgam, Jammu Tawi, Martyr Capt Tushar Mahajan and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi (SMVD) Katra—have been selected for redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS).
The information was shared in Parliament as part of the Government of India’s ongoing efforts to modernise railway stations across the country and enhance passenger amenities, connectivity and regional development. The inclusion of these stations reflects the strategic and economic importance of Jammu and Kashmir in the national transport network.
Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, selected stations are being redeveloped through a long-term, phased master planning approach, focusing on improved station access, upgraded passenger facilities and enhanced integration with city infrastructure. The scheme aims to transform stations into modern, passenger-friendly transit hubs while preserving local identity and heritage.
Jammu Tawi, a major railhead and gateway to the Union Territory, is expected to see substantial improvements in passenger circulation, waiting areas, accessibility features and multimodal integration. The redevelopment is likely to ease congestion and improve travel experience for thousands of daily commuters and long-distance passengers.
SMVD Katra station, which serves as the base rail point for pilgrims visiting the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, holds special significance. Upgradation of this station is expected to enhance facilities for pilgrims, including better crowd management, improved amenities and smoother connectivity, particularly during peak pilgrimage seasons.
The inclusion of Budgam station reflects the growing importance of rail connectivity within the Kashmir Valley, especially in view of the expanding rail network under the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. Redevelopment of Budgam station is expected to improve local mobility and support regional economic activity.
Similarly, Martyr Capt Tushar Mahajan station, named in honour of the Indian Army officer, will benefit from infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving passenger convenience, safety and overall station aesthetics.
Officials said that the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme focuses on need-based and region-specific development, including improved platforms, modern waiting halls, enhanced signage, digital information systems, better lighting, sanitation facilities and provisions for persons with disabilities. Emphasis is also being laid on sustainable practices, energy efficiency and improved station surroundings.
The redevelopment of these stations is expected to contribute not only to better passenger experience but also to employment generation, tourism growth and urban development in their respective regions. Improved railway infrastructure is seen as a key enabler for economic integration and social mobility in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Ministry of Railways has been working closely with Northern Railway and local authorities to ensure timely execution of redevelopment works while minimising inconvenience to passengers during the construction phase.
The selection of four stations from Jammu and Kashmir under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme underlines the Centre’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure in the Union Territory and integrating it more closely with India’s modern transport ecosystem.
