AUG 12: Forest Minister Javed Ahmed Rana, conducted a comprehensive review of the proposed upgradation plans for the Jumboo Zoo, outlining a roadmap to transform it into a premier destination for tourism, education, and wildlife conservation.
Chairing a meeting with senior officials from the Forest and Wildlife Departments, the Minister called for introducing new attractions, upgrading visitor facilities, and adopting global best practices in zoo management. He said the objective is not only to enhance the visitor experience and increase footfall but also to ensure that the zoo plays a stronger role in wildlife protection and environmental awareness.
The Minister emphasised that the upgraded Jumboo Zoo must maintain the highest standards of animal care. He directed officials to ensure strict compliance with veterinary protocols for animal diets, fodder quality, and overall nutrition. “The health and well-being of animals must remain the top priority alongside improving tourist facilities,” he said.
He also stressed the importance of creating interactive and educational spaces for schoolchildren and families, such as wildlife interpretation centres, guided tours, and conservation awareness programmes. The aim, he added, is to inspire a deeper appreciation for biodiversity among visitors while making the zoo a vibrant and family-friendly destination.
Officials briefed the Minister on proposed plans including improved enclosures, landscaped pathways, enhanced seating areas, modern ticketing systems, and food courts offering hygienic options. The Minister suggested exploring partnerships with wildlife experts, conservation NGOs, and tourism boards to bring in innovative ideas and global expertise.
Javed Ahmed Rana said that with its unique location and diversity of species, Jumboo Zoo has immense untapped potential. The upcoming upgrades, he added, will not only boost tourism but also reinforce Jammu and Kashmir’s commitment to wildlife conservation and sustainable tourism development.
