9 July: NEW DELHI: The Government of India has supported the distribution of more than 22 lakh farm machines under the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation (SMAM), reinforcing its commitment to modernizing agriculture, improving farm productivity, and reducing the dependence on manual labour.
According to official information, the initiative is aimed at promoting the adoption of modern agricultural equipment among farmers, particularly small and marginal cultivators, to enhance efficiency and boost crop production. The scheme provides financial assistance for the purchase of various farm implements and machinery, making advanced technology more accessible to the farming community.
The Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation focuses on increasing the use of tractors, power tillers, seed drills, harvesters, planters, and other modern equipment that help farmers perform agricultural operations more efficiently. Mechanisation is expected to reduce production costs, save time, and improve the overall quality of farming practices.
Officials said that the scheme also encourages the establishment of Custom Hiring Centres (CHCs), enabling farmers who cannot afford expensive machinery to rent equipment at affordable rates. This approach ensures that modern farm technology reaches even small landholders, promoting inclusive agricultural development.
The government believes that increased mechanisation is essential for addressing labour shortages during peak farming seasons and improving operational efficiency. Modern equipment also enables timely sowing, harvesting, irrigation, and post-harvest management, contributing to higher agricultural productivity.
The initiative forms part of the Centre’s broader strategy to strengthen the agriculture sector through technology-driven solutions. Alongside mechanisation, the government has been promoting precision farming, digital agriculture, improved irrigation systems, and sustainable farming practices to enhance farmers’ incomes.
Agricultural experts have welcomed the large-scale distribution of machinery, stating that mechanisation plays a critical role in transforming Indian agriculture. They note that access to modern equipment can improve crop yields, reduce physical labour, and enhance resource efficiency while supporting climate-resilient farming practices.
Officials added that special emphasis has been placed on ensuring that women farmers, farmer producer organisations (FPOs), cooperative societies, and rural entrepreneurs also benefit from the scheme. Subsidies and support mechanisms have been designed to encourage wider participation across different sections of the farming community.
The programme has also generated employment opportunities in the manufacturing, servicing, and maintenance of agricultural machinery, contributing to rural economic growth. Increased demand for farm equipment has supported domestic manufacturing under the government’s emphasis on self-reliance and technological advancement.
Experts believe that continued investment in agricultural mechanisation will help improve food security, increase farm profitability, and make Indian agriculture more competitive. Better access to modern machinery is expected to play an important role in achieving sustainable agricultural growth.
The government reiterated that strengthening the agriculture sector remains a key priority and that initiatives such as the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation will continue to support farmers through technology, innovation, and improved access to modern farming solutions.
