OCT 10:The GST Reforms 2025 have ushered in a major boost for Manipur’s traditional and small-scale industries, strengthening the state’s economic foundation across sectors such as handloom, handicrafts, bamboo, food processing, coffee cultivation, and dairy. With revised GST rates as low as 5%, the reforms aim to promote inclusive growth, stimulate rural entrepreneurship, and enhance the competitiveness of Manipur’s unique local products in national and global markets.

Manipur’s economy thrives on its community-based industries and skilled workforce. Over 2.5 lakh weavers, 1.2 lakh artisans, 1.5 lakh food processing workers, and more than 1 lakh dairy farmers stand to benefit directly from the tax reductions. The new structure not only lowers production costs but also increases affordability and demand, empowering small producers and self-help groups.

The reduction of GST on handloom textiles from 12% to 5% is expected to give a strong push to iconic Manipuri fabrics like Phanek and Innaphi, boosting income for women artisans and expanding export potential. Similarly, bamboo and cane craft sectors, employing over a lakh artisans in Churachandpur and Ukhrul, will benefit from reduced taxes on furniture and handmade items.

In the agriculture and agro-processing sectors, the cut in GST for processed foods such as pickles and fermented vegetables will enhance the market reach of rural SMEs, while a drop in taxes on packaged coffee will empower around 10,000 Arabica coffee growers in the hill districts. The dairy sector, with over 1 lakh producers, will also gain through lower taxes on essential products like paneer, ghee, and butter.

Officials say these reforms reflect the Centre’s commitment to balanced regional development and inclusive economic growth, ensuring that India’s Northeastern states are active contributors to national progress.

Overall, the GST Reforms 2025 are expected to generate greater employment, promote entrepreneurship, and reinforce Manipur’s position as a hub of sustainable, community-driven industry and innovation.
