DEC 21: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert forecasting heavy snowfall across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Muzaffarabad and Gilgit-Baltistan today, while cold wave conditions are expected to prevail over parts of Madhya Maharashtra, North Interior Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka and Telangana.
According to the IMD, an active western disturbance is influencing weather conditions across the western Himalayan region, leading to widespread snowfall and a sharp drop in temperatures. The department has advised residents and travellers in snow-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.
Snowfall Alert in Western Himalayan Region
The IMD stated that moderate to heavy snowfall is likely in higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, which may impact road connectivity, especially on mountain passes and arterial routes. Areas in Muzaffarabad and Gilgit-Baltistan are also expected to receive fresh snow, further intensifying winter conditions across the region.
Authorities have cautioned about the possibility of temporary road closures, traffic disruptions, and reduced visibility due to snowfall. Tourists and transporters have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and check traffic updates before venturing into high-altitude areas.
The weather department also warned of potential avalanches in vulnerable zones, urging local administrations to activate precautionary measures and emergency response mechanisms.
Cold Wave Conditions Across Peninsular India
While the northern regions brace for snowfall, cold wave conditions are likely to affect parts of Madhya Maharashtra, North Interior Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka and Telangana during the day. Minimum temperatures in these areas are expected to fall significantly below normal levels.
The IMD has advised people, especially the elderly, children, and those with health conditions, to take adequate precautions against cold-related illnesses. Farmers have also been urged to safeguard crops and livestock from the adverse impact of low temperatures.
Impact on Daily Life and Agriculture
Cold wave conditions may disrupt early morning activities, particularly in rural and semi-urban regions. Farmers have been advised to adopt protective measures such as light irrigation and covering crops to prevent frost damage.
In urban areas, health officials recommend wearing warm clothing, limiting exposure to cold during early hours, and ensuring adequate heating for vulnerable populations.
Advisory and Preparedness
The IMD continues to monitor weather patterns closely and will issue updates as conditions evolve. Disaster management authorities across affected states have been asked to remain on alert to address any weather-related emergencies.
Residents are advised to:
-
Follow IMD and local administration advisories
-
Avoid travel to high-altitude snow-bound areas
-
Keep emergency supplies ready
-
Take precautions against extreme cold
Weather Outlook
The IMD indicated that winter conditions are likely to persist over the next few days, with fluctuating temperatures across different regions of the country. Further updates will be issued based on the movement of weather systems
