SEP 09: In a landmark move to revolutionize global remittances and strengthen digital public infrastructure, Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, launched the historic UPI–UPU Integration at the 28th Universal Postal Congress held in Dubai.
The initiative, developed by India’s Department of Posts (DoP), NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), and the Universal Postal Union (UPU), integrates India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with the UPU Interconnection Platform. This strategic convergence brings together the vast postal network and UPI’s secure, real-time payment capabilities—offering a faster, safer, and more affordable remittance option to families across the world.
Describing the launch as a “social compact,” Shri Scindia emphasized that it is not just a technological advancement, but a people-centric solution rooted in equity and inclusion. He outlined India’s four-pillar vision for postal transformation: connect, include, modernise, and cooperate—leveraging AI, digital infrastructure, and South–South cooperation.
Highlighting India’s achievements under Digital India and Viksit Bharat missions, the Minister noted that over 560 million bank accounts have been opened—most in women’s names—under Aadhaar, Jan Dhan, and India Post Payments Bank. Last year alone, India Post delivered over 900 million parcels and letters, demonstrating unmatched scale and inclusiveness.
To further global postal cooperation, India committed USD 10 million to promote innovation in areas like digital payments and e-commerce. Shri Scindia also announced India’s candidature for the Council of Administration and the Postal Operations Council of UPU.
Concluding, he said: “India comes not with proposals, but with partnerships. We offer resilience, interoperability, and trust—linking identity, logistics, and payments to make global commerce seamless.”
