OCT 29: India and Nepal have taken a significant step toward strengthening regional energy cooperation as Nepal’s Minister of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, H.E. Kulman Ghising, met Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal, in New Delhi. The meeting focused on advancing collaboration in the power sector, including hydropower development and regional grid connectivity to enable efficient cross-border electricity exchange.
In the presence of both Ministers, POWERGRID, a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) of India, and the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) signed Joint Venture and Shareholders’ Agreements (JV&SHA) for the creation of two joint venture entities — one each in India and Nepal. These entities will implement two major 400 kV cross-border transmission projects: the Inaruwa (Nepal)–New Purnea (India) line and the Lamki (Dododhara) (Nepal)–Bareilly (India) line.
Once completed, these high-capacity corridors will substantially enhance electricity trade, improve grid resilience, and contribute to sustainable economic growth in both nations. The projects will also strengthen regional energy security and promote the integration of renewable power sources.
The meeting underscored the growing momentum in India-Nepal energy collaboration, rooted in mutual trust, shared geography, and a joint vision for sustainable development. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation for a cleaner, greener, and interconnected South Asian energy future. ⚡🤝
